Introduction
Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, the Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.
The 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1988, and was the non-chronometer version of the non-date Submariner. There were a multitude of dial variants made over those 26 years, ranging from gilt chapter ring dials in the beginning to matte dials, then ultimately the glossy dials with white gold luminous surrounds.

THE DIAL
Sporting gilt inscriptions, this ref. 5513 example boasts one of the earliest dial variants produced for the ref. 5513, with its production running from 1962 until 1966. Additionally, it also features the rare underline that sits below its SUBMARINER inscription at 6 o'clock.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Featuring a unique aesthetic unlike most other Submariners, this example's bracelet has been swapped for a leather strap, and its rotating black aluminum bezel has been swapped for a plain steel bezel, giving it a casual aesthetic that is also easily reversible.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The steel pointed-crown-guard case shows surface scratches and nicks consistent with age, while the case back displays scratches and a personal engraving. The watch retains its original “no dots” Twinlock winding crown. The crystal is heavily crazed and has many surface abrasions and possible cracks. The gilt underline dial shows surface marks along with some light bubbling to the lacquer. The lume on the hour plots has discoloured in places, while the hand lume has darkened considerably. The acrylic crystal shows numerous scratches and small nicks. Please note that this watch is offered without a bezel or insert.
Our Perspective
A rare PCG example with an extremely rare gilt underline dial, this 5513 is a wonderful exhibition of the intricacies of vintage Rolex that collectors have grown to love over the years.
