Introduction
Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around. Offered here we have one of the Submariner's first two references, the ref. 6205

THE DIAL
While not the original dial, this ref. 6205's display still features a stunning deep orange patina on its hour markers that allude to this timepiece's impressive age.

THE CONSTRUCTION
From a time before Rolex introduced the endlinks that we know today, this ref. 6205 boasts an Oyster bracelet with straight end-pieces thats give the watch a decided vintage aesthetic; an aesthetic that its smaller 37mm diameter also leans into.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case has soft but full lugs, with some scratches and marks along the edges. Numbers between the lugs show some wear but are all fully legible. The bezel insert is a later Rolex service part with a tritium pearl fitted on its original nickel-plated bezel assembly. The watch has a matte tritium service dial with pumpkin colored tritium luminous plots. The surface has little to no signs of aging and is near-mint overall. The later hands have been resumed to match the color of the tritium dial plots. Watch comes on an original 7206 oyster rivet band with straight endpieces. There are 12 links total with minimal stretch and the watch fits a 7 1/4" wrist.
Our Perspective
One of the two original Submariner references, the ref. 6205 and ref. 6204 are both lauded as two of the most iconic Rolex references to ever come out of the Genevan Giant's factory thanks to the incredible impact that had on watchmaking as a whole.
