Introduction
Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.
Offered as one of the original Submariner references, the watch that we have here is the revered ‘Small Crown’ ref. 6536-1. Launched in 1956 and produced for a short handful of years until 1959, the ref. 6536 is immediately distinguishable due to its eponymous small crown and lack of crown guards. Additionally, it features a red triangle on its bezel which would house its luminous pip and encircle its black gilt dial whose luminous hands and indices would be powered by radium. A truly exceptional example of the Submariner’s origins, the ref. 6536-1 shows us where the Submariner began with its construction, overarching design and functionality all being terrifically close to its modern counter-parts. Furthermore, offered here our example is presented in truly spectacular condition with well-preserved bevels on its lugs, and a dark black bezel that lacks almost any type of scratch or dent, which are pretty common given aluminum’s properties as a metal.

THE DIAL
Boasting a black gilt dial with gorgeously aged radium luminous hour markers and hands, this ref. 6536-1 wears its 60+ years of age wonderfully as it gives us a glimpse back into what a Submariner from the 1950s would have originally looked like.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Launched long before Rolex were the luxury watchmaker that they are today, it's rare to see any four-digit reference from them in spectacular condition, least of all a Submariner, which was designed to be worn hard. However, this ref. 6536-1 is offered in truly outstanding condition with thick bevels, an almost untouched bezel and a beautifully aged dial and handset that only add to its charm.

Condition
Watch is in near-mint vintage condition. Case has thick lugs with sharp chamfers. Surface wear is evident, but the watch appears seldomly worn since first sold. The red triangle insert is near-mint. Surface is virtually un-marred and the red triangle insert is bright red. The pearl is broken. The original gilt dial is near-mint. The dial surface is glossy and un-marred, with no crazing visible. The dial has aged with a tropical affect as some parts of the dial have turned brown. Luminous plots are original and perfectly domed. Slight spotting is visible on some of the lumes. Original gilt hands and white seconds hand are aged, with slightly discoloration visible in the luminous. The movement is near-mint, and the inside of the caseback does not appear to have watchmakers service marks. The original Swiss rivet expansion bracelet has 12 links total. There is slight play in the band. Watch comes with the original paper price tag for $175.
Our Perspective
We are very proud to bring to market this exceptionally high quality 6536-1. A true time capsule, the watch appears to have laid dormant for many years waiting for the right collector. We love the original paper price tag for the princely sum of $175.
