Introduced in 1955, the Rolex Submariner reference 6538 is one of the most celebrated sports watches ever produced. Building on the success of the earliest Submariner references, it introduced the now-famous oversized 8mm winding crown, earning the enduring nickname "Big Crown." Produced for only a few years before the arrival of crown guards on the reference 5512, the 6538 represents the purest expression of Rolex's original professional dive watch, combining uncompromising functionality with proportions that have become legendary among collectors.

The reference's place in popular culture was cemented when Sean Connery wore a 6538 in Dr. No (1962), marking the first appearance of a Rolex on James Bond's wrist. That association transformed an already important dive watch into one of the most recognisable wristwatches ever made. This particular example has been sympathetically maintained with Rolex service dial and hands, preserving its practicality while remaining unmistakably a 6538. Fitted to the quintessential single-pass nylon strap associated with Bond's early appearances on screen, it captures the spirit of one of cinema's most iconic watches while remaining one of the defining references in Rolex's sporting history.

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and light nicks, as expected of a tool watch of this vintage. The steel Rolex service bezel remains well defined, whilst the aftermarket "Crown Art Customs" red triangle insert has a few small marks. The 8mm Brevet winding crown shows significant wear. The tritium service dial and hands are in near-mint condition. The serial number- 126314, is present but is partially worn out and only fully visible with a loupe. It is fitted with a fabric strap.
