Introduction

Debuting in 1953 and released to the public the following year, the Rolex Submariner has undoubtedly become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its legendary status as Rolex's flagship dive watch. Used extensively by the British Royal Navy and professional diving operations like COMEX, the Submariner set the bar for all dive watches to follow. Featuring a genuinely timeless design that has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history, this Rolex has become the archetypal sports watch. With very few large-scale aesthetic upgrades made to it over the years except for timely advancements like introducing a date function to the collection in the late '60s, and its modern cerachrom bezels, the Submariner is seen as the prototypical dive watch thanks to its consistency. The Submariner has earned its status as a legendary watch, with it today remaining as one of the most sought-after timepieces around.

Offered here we have a Rolex Submariner ref. 116610 customized by famed watch customization house Prohunter. Best-known for their use of DLC coatings, such as the one on this example, Prohunter have taken inspiration from the Submariner’s heritage as a tool watch and given it a stealthy blacked-out aesthetic. In addition to customizing its dial with their logo and new red script for its Submariner inscription, as a throwback to its past, this timepiece combines modern ideals with heritage-inspired details. Fitted with fixed spring bars, as a reference to the legendary ref. 5517 MilSub, the resulting timepiece is aggressive and utilitarian.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The PVD-coated steel case remains well defined, with the coating gently worn through on the edges of the case, case back, bezel edge, and winding crown, along with some additional small surface scratches present. The ceramic insert shows a few small marks. The dial and hands remain near mint. Due to the fixed lug bars, the watch can only be worn on a NATO-style strap, and it is fitted with the original Prohunter strap showing wear around the holes, along with a black buckle displaying light surface scratches.

Our Perspective

An interesting ode to one of Rolex's most elusive and historic Submariner variants and the model's past in general, the Prohunter Rolex Submariner ref. 116610 blends an iconic design with the creature comforts of a modern design to create something that is immaculate and entirely wearable as an everyday watch.
