Introduction

Perhaps one of the most iconic timepieces to have ever hit the market, the Rolex Daytona is widely recognized as one of the most desirable watches there is. Distinguished by its three generations, what we have here is the 3rd generation (6-digit reference) Daytona Cosmograph powered by Rolex's first in-house fully-integrated column-wheel actuated chronograph movement, the cal. 4130. Moving on from the Zenith-supplied El Primero-derived cal. 4030, Rolex stepped up their game in 2000 when they launched the 3rd generation Daytona (still the current generation), with one of the most impressive tool watch chronograph movements ever made. A wonderful expression of Rolex's engineering capabilities and the consistency in their iconic design language, this two-tone 18kt yellow gold and stainless steel example blends the Daytona’s rich heritage as a tool watch with Rolex’s affinity for the luxurious to wonderful effect. With its black dial sporting golden inscriptions and an 18kt gold bezel with its own black inscriptions, this Daytona perfects its luxurious aesthetic in a deeply appealing manner.

THE DIAL

In conjunction with its two-tone construction, this example sports another memoir to luxury ideals, a black and gold dial - an iconic duo indeed.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Unapologetically familiar, the Daytona's construction has become an icon in horology for decades with the ref. 116523's two-tone case and bracelet bringing both, a comforting heft and impressive presence to the wrist in abundance.

Condition

Watch is in excellent condition. There is superficial wear evident on the case and bracelet. Lower left lug has a ding on the edge that can easily be polished out if so desired. The bezel is still sharp and the black enameling of the tachometer is intact. Bracelet has little to no stretch and has full links.

Our Perspective

A resounding piece of luxury, the Daytona sits at the apex of horology as one of the most sought-after watches on the market, and in its luxurious two-tone configuration, it deserves every bit of praise it gets.
