Rolex White Gold Datejust Lapis Dial 1601

Introduction

Released to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary in 1945, the Rolex Datejust has become one of the Genevan Giant's most iconic watches. The world's first wristwatch to display the date via an aperture on the dial, the Datejust revolutionized wristwatch design for decades to follow. With its emblematic Cyclops lens, jubilee bracelet (designed specifically for the model in 1945), and classy fluted precious metal bezel, the Datejust's aesthetic has always been that of pure elegance and class. Perhaps one of Rolex's most recognizable designs, the Datejust has evolved from its dressier roots into a perfectly capable timepiece rivaling the robustness of most brand's sports watches. Featuring a stainless steel case with a screw-down crown and caseback, the Datejust packs an impressive 100m of water resistance alongside its consistently capable movements and construction that have enabled it to become one of the best-equipped watches for daily wear and tear. Available with several different dial options, in a multitude of materials, and across many styles, the Datejust is an inescapable reflection of its owner, with a model out there to suit pretty much everybody's tastes and preferences.

This wg example of the reference 1601 is one of the first to feature a stone dial. Already uncommon in WG construction, the rarity of this example is further accentuated by its Lapis Lazuli dial, which in itself is almost unheard of in white gold.

THE DIAL

While the lapis lazuli dial is rare amongst Rolex models, it is even more difficult to find in the Datejust, as it was often used in the Day-Date collection instead. Already uncommon to find in yellow gold, seeing a white gold example for sale is virtually unheard of. Famed for its deep shade of blue, it is a stunning example of how to properly execute a stone dial.

THE CASE

Building upon its already rare semi-precious stone dial, this Datejust also features an entirely 18k white gold construction - an incredibly unique configuration due to the low demand Rolex experienced from customers for white gold Datejusts.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Overall condition of the watch is very good. Original Lapis dial is free from cracks and is like new. Correct original non-luminous hands are fitted to the watch. Case and bracelet have minor surface abrasions throughout. Original white gold "2 dot" crown is still on the watch. Bracelet has moderate stretch, consistent with average use over the watch's 40+ years of life. There are a total of 19 links.

Our Perspective

Combining its beautiful and rare lapis lazuli dial with its entirely 18k white gold construction, this ref. 1601 is one of the most unique Datejust examples we have had the pleasure of offering.
