Introduction
While not traditionally known for boasting famed watchmakers like some other countries, Finland has undoubtedly found its way onto the map thanks to Sarapeneva - one of the most unique and distinctive independent watchmakers in the industry. Launched in 2020 to celebrate a Finnish comic strip's 75th anniversary, Sarapaneva debuted the Moomin as an ode to the iconic comic strip's characters, design, and place within Scandinavian culture. Considering its fantastical inspiration, the Moomin's construction is rather sensible with a 42mm stainless steel case that features a domed bezel with bright polishing and pronounced lugs that flow with the case. While the Moomin's aesthetic appears to be largely monochromatic with its dial taking on several shades of grey, there is more to the Moomin's dial than first meets the eye. In normal lighting conditions, Moomin, the cartoon character, and the scene around him all devoid of colour. However, in the dark, the dial lights up and takes on the appearance of stained glass with greens, blues and oranges, all illuminating the Moomin's dial in the dark with eight different colours thanks to hand-painted Technicolour Super-Luminova. Limited to just 100 pieces across four handset options, of which we have the steel rhodium option, made of 25 pieces each, this is a unique and rare timepiece from an independent watchmaker that knows how to create a fun and interesting design that is as beautiful as it promises to be.

THE DIAL
While its dial seems distinctly monochromatic in normal conditions, the Moomin's display illuminates beautifully when it is in the dark with a mixture of blues, greens, oranges and purples all filling the background that surrounds Moomin.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Not ones to half-do a job, Sarpaneva made sure to fit the Moomin with a movement fit for the incredible dial they gave the watch, and so its cal. A10 soprod movement is fitted with a custom skeletonised winding rotor with Sarpaneva's moon face logo.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case is very well defined, with a couple of light scratches on the case side and a few marks on the backs of the lugs. The dial and hands are pristine. It is fitted with a black leather strap with a pin buckle in near-mint condition. Comes complete with box and papers.
Our Perspective
An intriguing watch even without its story and context, the Moomin showcases what is possible when independent watchmakers cast off the shackles the collecting community has put on them with its incredible dial that punches high above its weight class in terms of design, execution and beauty.
