Introduction
Independent watchmaking is often defined by mechanical complexity, but Sartory-Billard's SB10 takes a different approach, reconsidering the very way time is displayed. Created to celebrate the brand's tenth anniversary, the SB10 evolved from the ambitious SB08 concept unveiled in 2024, retaining its most distinctive ideas while introducing a more practical and wearable architecture. The result is a watch without a conventional dial or hands, replacing familiar indications with a jumping-hour display and continuously rotating minutes. For founder Armand Billard, it represents an important milestone as the brand's first complication and a new expression of its commitment to unconventional design.
The SB10 Black Sapphire places a smoked sapphire cabochon at the centre of its 39.5mm stainless steel case. Borrowing from the language of jewellery, this polished, tactile element replaces the traditional dial, partially revealing the mechanism beneath while shifting between reflection and translucency. Hours appear through an unusually generous aperture at six o'clock, with oversized numerals designed by typographer Simon Schmidt, while the minutes are indicated by a rotating sapphire disc carrying a red marker. A peripheral ring of luminous material creates a striking turquoise halo in darkness. Beneath this unusual display is a La Joux-Perret G100 automatic movement fitted with Sartory-Billard's patented jumping-hour mechanism, bringing mechanical substance to a design that challenges the conventions of timekeeping.

THE DIAL
The SB10 dispenses with a conventional dial and hands entirely. A smoked black sapphire cabochon occupies the centre, surrounded by a rotating sapphire minute disc with a red indicator and luminous BGW9 ring. At six o'clock, oversized numerals appear through a jumping-hour aperture, advancing instantaneously every 60 minutes.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 39.5mm stainless steel case combines polished and brushed surfaces, measures 11.5mm thick and has a compact 44mm lug-to-lug length. Its defining feature is the externally mounted smoked sapphire cabochon, conceived as a tactile element rather than a conventional dial. Water resistance is rated to 80 metres.

Our Perspective
The SB10 demonstrates how an independent watchmaker can create something genuinely unconventional without relying on excessive mechanical complication. Its appeal lies in the contrast between the instantaneous jumping hour, the continuously rotating minutes and the almost sculptural presence of the central sapphire cabochon.
