Introduction
Launched as a Japanese domestic market-only (JDM) watch and the first fully integrated automatic chronograph in the world featuring column wheel and vertical coupling mechanism, the Seiko ‘Baby Panda’ ref. 6138-800x is a beloved refence amongst Seiko collectors, and it’s no surprise why. Powered by one of Seiko’s most revered historical movements, the 23-jewel cal. 6138 that was introduced in 1971, and only in production for one year, and cased only inside the ref. 6138-8001 and its slightly smaller sibling, the ref. 6138-8000.As a result of its movement, the ‘Baby Panda’ features a column wheel that regulates its chronograph functions and a vertical clutch mechanism to regulate engagement. Additionally it also boasts a quick-set day/date indicator and can be handwound, which is unlike the ref. 6139 model and relatively unique for Seiko chronographs of this era. Offered on a stainless steel bracelet, a universally-wearable 40mm stainless steel case and a monochromatic white panda dial (hence its name), the ref. 6138-8001 is a fantastic piece to add to any Seiko fan’s collection.

THE DIAL
Fitted with a classic white 'Panda' dial with black subdials, the 'Baby Panda' lives us to its name with withs monochromatic color-scheme. An additional point of reference is the Baby Panda's day wheel which is in Japanese, as the variant itself was a JDM offering.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Offered as the 'Jumbo' variant, the ref. 6138-8001 was slightly larger than its sibling, the ref. 6138-8000 and thus wears with a larger profile on the wrist.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in excellent overall vintage condition. Case has scratches and marks visible on both the brushed lugs and case as well as the polished bezel. The dial is in near-mint condition showing minor sings of wear. There is an extra black dial that is included with the watch that is in worn but very good condition. Bracelet comes with 23 links, 4 that are removable. There are two extra links included on the side.
Our Perspective
Offered only to the Japanese domestic market and thus both rare and intensely collectible within the Seiko scene, it's not often examples of the 'Baby Panda' make it to market in condition like ours and with a spare dial to boot.
