Introduction
Seiko's enormous domestic catalogue has long provided a home for some of the Japanese manufacture's most experimental designs, and the Moving Design series is a particularly interesting example. Created as a platform for exploring unconventional approaches to displaying time, the collection allowed designers to rethink the familiar relationship between dial, hands and movement without abandoning traditional mechanical watchmaking.
Designed by Tomoko Tomita and introduced in 2007, the Moving Design Discus takes that idea to an extreme. Rather than conventional hands, three concentric rotating discs display the hours, minutes and seconds through a small aperture positioned towards the edge of the dial. This reference SCBS005 is the striking white version, pairing its almost entirely blank white face with a stainless steel case and exposed metallic time discs. The result is a watch that appears remarkably simple until the mechanical display is seen in motion.

THE DIAL
Almost entirely devoid of conventional indications, the white dial conceals three concentric rotating discs beneath its surface. Hours, minutes and seconds are read through the off-centre aperture, creating a mechanical interpretation of a digital display and transforming the familiar architecture of a three-hand watch into something altogether more unusual.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring 41mm in diameter, the hardened stainless steel case has a deliberately smooth, rounded profile that has led collectors to nickname the model the "Discus Burger." A sapphire crystal protects the display, while the case back repeats the dial-side concept with a small aperture offering a glimpse of the mechanical movement within.

Condition
Watch is in overall like-new condition. The case shows only light signs of handling, and there are some light creases in the leather strap. Comes with inner and outer boxes, guarantee leaflet, booklet and hangtag.
Our Perspective
The Moving Design Discus demonstrates the more experimental side of Seiko particularly well. Tomoko Tomita took a conventional automatic movement and completely reconsidered the way its information should be presented, creating a watch that looks almost electronic despite being entirely mechanical. The stark white SCBS005 makes that contrast especially effective and, with its Japanese-market origins and wonderfully unconventional rotating-disc display, represents an intriguing piece of Seiko's modern design history.
