Created by German maker of “tool” watches Sinn Spezialuhren for the 40th anniversary of a Singapore retailer, the 356 Flieger “The Hour Glass” is a utilitarian as a Sinn should be, but with a touch of vintage charm. The dial has an aged gunmetal finish that steals the show with its variegated brushed finish applied in random directions, giving the dial a weathered, almost industrial feel. It’s reminiscent of cockpit instruments that have seen decades of service - if you’ve toured a retired B-52 bomber you’ll understand instantly. The red running seconds hand at nine o’clock adds a quirky, if slightly unconventional, pop of color, and ties back to the cockpit instrumentation feel.

The 38.5mm stainless steel case is surprisingly wearable for a pilots watch, but its height and Sinn’s famous build quality add heft and presence. The case is unapologetically rugged and utilitarian, with a matte bead-blasted finish and domed acrylic crystal that leans into its vintage aesthetic. The stepped bezel and angular crown guards give it a distinctive silhouette.

The same is true inside, with the basic-but-bulletproof Sellita SW-500, based on the reliable workhorse movement that is the Valjoux 7750. As special and characterful as this watch is, it was released as a limited edition of just 100 pieces, making opportunities to acquire one few and far between.

The watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case shows some light signs of wear, with a couple of small marks on the polished bezel. The case back has very light signs of wear. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a brown leather strap with a steel buckle, both in near-mint condition. The watch comes complete with its zip box, warranty, booklet, and strap tool.
