Introduction
Few watchmakers have embraced the philosophy of purpose-built instruments quite as wholeheartedly as Sinn. Founded in Frankfurt in 1961, the German manufacturer has developed a reputation for producing exceptionally robust watches designed to perform in demanding professional environments. The EZM collection, short for Einsatzzeitmesser, or mission timer, represents perhaps the purest expression of this approach. Introduced in 1997, the EZM1 was originally developed for the specialist maritime units of Germany's customs service, combining a highly legible chronograph display with a lightweight titanium case and an unconventional left-hand crown arrangement. Every aspect of its design was dictated by practicality, resulting in one of the most distinctive professional chronographs of its generation.
The EZM1, reference 503, is particularly interesting for its use of the legendary Lemania 5100 movement, whose centrally mounted chronograph minutes hand allows elapsed time to be read immediately without consulting a subsidiary register. Sinn took this functionality a step further by eliminating unnecessary dial indications, creating an exceptionally clear black display with contrasting red chronograph hands. The substantial titanium case features a bead-blasted finish that reinforces its utilitarian character, while the left-hand crown and pushers help prevent interference with the wearer's wrist. This example is fitted with a matching titanium bracelet, creating a cohesive, lightweight configuration that complements the watch's uncompromising professional design.

THE DIAL
The matte black dial embodies Sinn's functional design philosophy, with large luminous hour markers, highly legible hands and contrasting red chronograph indications. The dial is stamped 3H, the chemical symbol for tritium, which was replaces in 2002 with Ar. A discreet date aperture completes the deliberately restrained arrangement.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40mm bead-blasted titanium case features an unconventional left-hand crown and chronograph pushers, positioned to minimise interference with the wrist. Its lightweight construction and restrained finish reflect the watch's professional origins, while the matching titanium bracelet provides a practical alternative to the leather and textile straps frequently associated with the EZM1.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The titanium case shows a few surface marks and small nicks, including a couple of more noticeable nicks along the lower edge of the non-crown side of the case. The case back engravings remain crisp and well defined. The bezel shows some small nicks, while the insert is in near-mint condition. The 3H-marked dial is in near-mint condition, with some patina to the tritium hour markers. The hands remain clean. The titanium bracelet is in excellent condition, with light surface marks. The bracelet is fitted with 11 links, two of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7¾” wrist. Comes with box and booklet.
Our Perspective
The original EZM1 has developed a devoted following among collectors who appreciate watches designed around genuine professional requirements. Its combination of a titanium case, left-hand controls and the increasingly sought-after Lemania 5100 gives it a character quite unlike conventional sports chronographs.
