Introduction
Speake-Marin's Academic collection takes the independent brand's most recognisable design codes and presents them in a deliberately clean, contemporary form. Introduced in this white configuration in 2023, the Academic White is built around the latest generation of the Piccadilly case, the architectural form that has long defined Speake-Marin. Here it is executed in lightweight Grade 5 titanium and paired with an unusually restrained two-level white lacquer dial, allowing the characteristic typography and asymmetric small-seconds display to provide much of the watch's personality.
At 42mm across and just 10.5mm thick, the Academic White has considerable visual presence without the weight traditionally associated with a watch of these proportions. The dial combines matte black details with luminous hour markers and a small-seconds indication positioned unusually at approximately 1:30. Beneath it is Speake-Marin's automatic SMA03, an integrated micro-rotor calibre offering 52 hours of power reserve. Visible through the sapphire case back, the movement is an important part of the watch's appeal, giving the otherwise minimalist Academic White a distinctly horological foundation.

THE DIAL
The two-level dial is finished in glossy white lacquer, contrasted by matte grey and orange details and Speake-Marin's distinctive typography. Super-LumiNova hour markers provide additional definition, while the small-seconds display positioned asymmetrically at approximately 1:30 gives the otherwise restrained composition its most recognisable visual feature.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The 42mm Piccadilly case is fashioned from Grade 5 titanium and measures 10.5mm thick. Its distinctive stepped architecture and pronounced lugs provide the familiar Speake-Marin silhouette, while sapphire crystals front and back receive anti-reflective treatment. Water resistance is rated to 30 metres.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The titanium case shows a number of scratches and scuffs consistent with wear. The display case back retains well-defined engravings around the edge and shows signs of wear. The dial and hands are in like-new condition. The watch is fitted with a white strap showing signs of wear and a titanium buckle with scratches. Comes with outer box, inner zip pouch, warranty and cloth.
Our Perspective
The Academic White is particularly successful because its apparent simplicity leaves the defining Speake-Marin elements exposed. The Piccadilly case, unconventional small-seconds placement and distinctive dial graphics provide the character, while the Grade 5 titanium construction and integrated micro-rotor SMA03 give it considerably more technical substance than its minimalist appearance initially suggests.
