When Jack Heuer introduced the Carrera in 1963, he created a chronograph that would become one of the defining designs of the decade. Named after the notoriously dangerous Carrera Panamericana road race, the watch was conceived as a practical timing instrument, with a clean, highly legible dial and an elegantly proportioned case. Its distinctive faceted lugs, uncluttered chronograph registers and restrained typography established a design language that has endured for more than six decades. While subsequent generations of the Carrera have explored increasingly contemporary interpretations, the original models remain particularly appealing to collectors for their simplicity and connection to the golden age of motorsport.

In 2018, TAG Heuer collaborated with Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara, founder of the influential streetwear label Fragment Design, to create a limited edition that returned the Carrera to its earliest aesthetic principles. Restricted to 500 pieces, the Carrera Fragment ref. CBK221A.EB0171 features a 39mm polished stainless steel case inspired by the original 1960s chronographs, complete with sharply faceted lugs, a polished bezel and a domed sapphire crystal. Its black opaline dial features three matching chronograph registers, a peripheral tachymeter scale and discreet Fragment branding, preserving the clarity of the original design while introducing subtle contemporary details. The watch is powered by TAG Heuer's automatic calibre Heuer 02, an integrated chronograph movement with an 80-hour power reserve. Originally presented on a distinctive black alligator leather cuff strap, the Carrera Fragment represents an unusually thoughtful collaboration between Swiss watchmaking and Japanese design, combining Fujiwara's understated aesthetic with one of Heuer's most celebrated historic models.

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and scuffs, particularly to the backs of the lugs from previous strap changes. The display case back retains well-defined engravings around the outer edge. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. It is fitted with a black leather cuff strap and TAG Heuer pin buckle showing surface scratches. Comes with inner and outer boxes, guarantee card, booklet, unused original TAG Heuer fabric strap and a purchase receipt from a pre-owned watch dealer dated 2023.

Limited to 500 pieces, the Carrera Fragment is one of the more compelling collaborations in TAG Heuer's modern history. Hiroshi Fujiwara's restrained interpretation respects the original Carrera's design while introducing just enough individuality to appeal to collectors of both watches and contemporary design.
