Introduction
Launched in 1969 to challenge Breitling’s market-leading chronograph models, the Heuer Monaco has grown from a relatively unsuccessful square-shaped chronograph into one of the most iconic timepieces within horology. Named after the city-state of Monaco in recognition of its link to F1 due to its Grand Prix, the Heuer Monaco is a timepiece that embodies Formula 1 and its link to watchmaking. Featuring a square case that was selected by Jack Heuer specifically for its visual disparity from the round chronographs that dominated the market, the Monaco has grown into a cult-like symbol, with it famously donning the wrist of Steve McQueen in the 1970 Hollywood classic ‘Le Mans’. Launched all of those years ago as the first automatic chronograph on the market, the ref. CW5140 that we have here remains true to its origins. Launched in the early 2000s, it comes powered by the automatic TAG Heuer cal. 17 movement. Featuring a silver dial, it sports the date at 6 o’clock, and three subdials for the running seconds, a 12-hour subdial and a 30-minute subdial, so that its chronograph is fully functional. Made of 18kt yellow gold, this example embodies Monaco’s luxurious lifestyle through its impressive construction and high-level craftsmanship. Designed for ease of use while driving, the Monaco’s goal as a time-keeping instrument for F1 drivers has enabled it to become synonymous with the automotive industry, with it today standing as one of the best-known chronographs on the market as a result of this close link.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case shows light scratches across the polished surfaces, while the case back has a couple of more noticeable marks but retains very well-defined engravings. The dial and hands are near-mint. The watch is fitted with a brown alligator strap in excellent condition, paired with a yellow gold TAG Heuer pin buckle that is also in excellent condition. It comes with a TAG Heuer service pouch and a service receipt dated 2023.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Remaining true to the Monaco's design language but with more impressive wrist presence than ever before, the ref. CW5140 is a luxuriously executed version of one of watchmaking's best-known and most influential timepieces.
