Introduction
Japanese designer Taichi Murakami has established a distinctive aesthetic that combines traditional craftsmanship with an experimental approach to materials, textures and construction. His work is characterised by an appreciation of artisanal techniques, particularly the use of precious metals, specialist leathers and carefully considered surface treatments. Rather than following conventional notions of luxury, Murakami's designs celebrate the individual character of their materials and the processes through which they are transformed. This philosophy extends to his accessories and timepieces, where traditional Japanese metalworking techniques are combined with contemporary design to create objects that occupy an intriguing space between functional accessories and wearable art.
The TYP.004 Watch 12H Selfwinding exemplifies this approach, combining a handcrafted sterling silver case with a mechanical automatic movement and a distinctive minimalist display. Measuring approximately 30mm in diameter, the case is fashioned from 925 sterling silver by a specialist Japanese silversmith and finished with a blackened surface treatment that emphasises the metal's texture and character. The dial is complemented by silver-coloured hands, creating a restrained composition that allows the unusual construction to take centre stage. The watch is fitted with a black strap crafted from genuine Horween Shell Cordovan, a premium leather prized for its density, durability and distinctive surface finish. A matching sterling silver buckle completes the design.

THE DIAL
The TYP.004 features a restrained time-only display with silver-coloured hands, reflecting Taichi Murakami's minimalist design philosophy. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration or multiple complications, the watch places emphasis on the relationship between its simple indications and the surrounding handcrafted sterling silver construction.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 30mm case is handcrafted from 925 sterling silver by a specialist Japanese silversmith. Its blackened finish gives the precious metal a distinctive appearance, emphasising the character of the material rather than a conventional polished surface. The watch is fitted with a black Horween Shell Cordovan strap and a matching sterling silver buckle, continuing the emphasis on artisanal materials and construction.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The blackened sterling silver case shows some surface scratches to its rough-textured finish, while the distinctive hand-finished case remains well defined. The distressed nature of the case is intentional by design. The dial and hands are like new. The leather strap shows signs of wear, as does the blackened sterling silver buckle. Comes with box and papers.
Our Perspective
The TYP.004 reflects Taichi Murakami's distinctive approach to craftsmanship, combining traditional Japanese silversmithing with mechanical watchmaking. Its blackened sterling silver case and Horween Shell Cordovan strap give this compact automatic watch a character rarely encountered in conventional contemporary timepieces.
