Introduction
Japan's watchmaking history extends far beyond the familiar names of Seiko and Citizen, encompassing a fascinating collection of smaller manufacturers whose contributions have largely been forgotten. Among them was Takano, a company established in Nagoya in 1899 that began producing wristwatches in 1957. Its ambitions culminated in the introduction of the Chateau collection in 1959, featuring movements developed and manufactured in Japan. However, fierce competition and the devastating Isewan Typhoon of the same year placed enormous pressure on the business, which ultimately became part of Ricoh in the early 1960s. More than six decades later, the Takano name has been revived by independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, whose reputation for combining traditional watchmaking with distinctive Japanese design has made him one of the country's most respected contemporary horologists.
Introduced in 2024, the Chateau Nouvelle Chronometer represents the first major expression of this revival, combining the elegance of mid-century Japanese dress watches with contemporary manufacturing and precision. Its 37mm stainless steel case features beautifully executed Zaratsu polishing, while the box-shaped sapphire crystal reinforces its vintage-inspired proportions. This black-dial version is particularly striking, with applied polished hour markers, a precise railway minute track and Asaoka's distinctive skyscraper-shaped hands, carefully curved to follow the profile of the dial. Within sits the automatic Takano calibre 90T, based on the Miyota 9015 and specially adjusted before undergoing chronometer testing at the Observatoire de Besançon in France. The Chateau Nouvelle was presented as the first Japanese watch to achieve certification from the institution, an important distinction for a revived brand whose original ambitions were closely associated with precision. The result is a thoughtfully executed contemporary watch that draws upon Japan's lesser-known horological history while establishing a new identity under Asaoka's direction.
