Introduction
Toledano & Chan made an unusually assured debut in 2024. Founded by artist and collector Phil Toledano and designer Alfred Chan, the independent brand grew from their shared fascination with Brutalist architecture and a desire to translate its uncompromising forms into a wristwatch. Their first model, the B/1, draws particular inspiration from Marcel Breuer's former Whitney Museum building in New York – now known as the Breuer Building – with its dramatically projecting forms, angular geometry and seemingly monolithic construction informing virtually every aspect of the watch.
The B/1 is far more than a conventional watch placed inside an unusual case. Its asymmetric stainless steel architecture, dial and crystal are angled towards the wearer, while the crown is moved to nine o'clock to preserve the uninterrupted geometry of the opposite side. That same line continues into an integrated bracelet with a pronounced taper and individually shaped links. At the centre is an unmarked slab of natural lapis lazuli, its rich blue colour and individual mineral inclusions providing an organic counterpoint to the deliberately severe case. THE DIAL
The B/1 dispenses entirely with branding, text and hour markers, leaving its natural lapis lazuli dial uninterrupted. Each stone consequently possesses its own pattern of blue tones and mineral inclusions. Angled towards the wearer along with the surrounding case, the dial becomes less a conventional display and more an integral part of the watch's architectural composition.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The B/1's stainless steel case measures 33.5mm across, with its sloping architecture resulting in a thickness ranging from approximately 9.1mm to 10.4mm. The crown sits at nine o'clock, while the prominent bevel on the opposite side continues through the sharply tapering integrated bracelet, whose changing proportions require individually shaped links.

Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case is in near-mint condition, with a few signs of light wear. The dial and hands are like new. The integrated steel bracelet shows some light surface scratches. The bracelet is fitted with 10 links and fits approximately a 6¾” wrist. There are 3 spare links included. Comes with box and warranty card.
Our Perspective
The B/1 works because its Brutalist inspiration informs the entire object rather than simply providing a story for an unusual case. The sloping dial, destro crown, continuous case-to-bracelet bevel and dramatic taper all serve the same architectural idea, while the lapis lazuli introduces just enough natural variation to soften the severity. As the 175-piece watch that established Toledano & Chan, it also represents the starting point for one of the more distinctive new independent design languages to emerge in recent years.
