Introduction
An admittedly utilitarian watch, the Tudor Oysterdate is refined and free from excess like a lot of other Tudor models. Launched in the 1950s, it features the manual-wind movement and boasts a stainless steel Rolex case and Rolex Oyster bracelet along with a Rolex winding cronw . Svelte by today’s proportions, the Oysterdate was sold as an entry-level cousin to the Rolex Datejust, with its 2mm smaller 34mm case and manual movement allowing its retail price to be that bit more palatable. Sporting a black waffle dial with a roulette datewheel whereby the numbers alternate between red and black, this ref. 7939 is a stunning example of mid-century utilitarianism at its finest.

THE DIAL
Boasting a black dial with a subtle waffle pattern and 18kt gold applied dagger indices and hands, the ref. 7939's dial is more refined and luxurious than one would assume a watch of its utilitarian nature would feature.

THE CONSTRUCTION
A watch designed to be worn hard and subjected to harsh wear and tear, the ref. 7939's stainless steel construction has proven to withstand the decades quite well and live up to its task.

Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. The 34.5mm case and case back show some signs of wear and marks. The bezel is also in excellent condition, retaining its original sharpness. The black waffle dial is in outstanding condition, with complete lume plots and clean hands. The rivet link Oyster bracelet has 11 links and fits an approximately 7" wrist. It shows light to moderate stretch.
Our Perspective
Combining the ref. 7939's no-frills aesthetic with a luxurious black and gold display dial, this timepiece is a wonderful example of how vintage Oysterdates have developed over the years.
