Introduction

Tudor's introduction of the Oysterdate Chronograph in 1970 marked the beginning of a remarkable chapter in the brand's history. The manually wound Homeplate and Monte Carlo models established a distinctive identity for Tudor's chronographs, combining colourful dials with practical features and robust Oyster cases. In 1976, the arrival of the third-generation chronographs represented an important technical evolution. The new 9400 series introduced the automatic Valjoux 7750 movement, replacing the manually wound calibres of the earlier models and bringing with it a three-register dial layout and quick-set date. Accommodating the automatic winding mechanism required a considerably thicker case, giving rise to the affectionate collector nickname 'Big Block'. The design would remain a cornerstone of Tudor's chronograph collection for the following two decades, evolving into the 79100 series in 1989.

Dating to 1995, this Tudor Chrono-Time ref. 79170 belongs to the final generation of Big Block chronographs, produced shortly before the introduction of the slimmer Prince Date chronographs in the mid-1990s. Its 40mm stainless steel Oyster case retains the substantial proportions that define the series, while the bidirectional rotating bezel features a black acrylic insert graduated for 12 hours, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone. The silver panda dial is complemented by three contrasting black registers, a date aperture at three o'clock and the characteristic arched 'Automatic Chrono Time' signature. Powered by the automatic Valjoux 7750, the watch combines the recognisable design language of Tudor's early chronographs with the convenience of a self-winding movement. As one of the last Big Block references, the 79170 represents an important transitional chapter in Tudor's chronograph history.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The silver dial features three contrasting black chronograph registers at six, nine and twelve o'clock, together with a date aperture at three. The distinctive arched 'Automatic Chrono Time' inscription identifies the watch as part of Tudor's self-winding chronograph family. Its contrasting panda configuration provides excellent legibility while retaining the visual character of the brand's earlier chronographs.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 40mm stainless steel Oyster case measures approximately 14.5mm thick, a consequence of accommodating the automatic Valjoux 7750 movement. Its substantial case profile inspired the Big Block nickname. Screw-down chronograph pushers and a screw-down crown reinforce the watch's purposeful construction, while the stainless steel Oyster bracelet completes its distinctly utilitarian appearance.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The case back shows some scratches, while the engravings remain well defined. The bezel is well defined, with a very clean insert. The dial is in near-mint condition, with well-preserved luminous hour plots. The acrylic crystal shows a number of surface scratches. It is fitted with a stainless steel solid-link Oyster reference 78360 bracelet with the correct reference 589 Big Block end links. The bracelet shows surface marks and negligible play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links, two of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.

Our Perspective

Among the final iterations of Tudor's celebrated Big Block, the ref. 79170 combines a classic panda dial with the versatility of a rotating 12-hour bezel. Its substantial Oyster case and automatic movement make it a compelling example of Tudor's transitional chronograph era.
