Introduction

The introduction of Tudor's third-generation chronographs in 1976 marked a significant turning point in the brand's history. Following the manually wound Homeplate and Monte Carlo models of the early 1970s, the new 9400 series introduced automatic winding for the first time, courtesy of the Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Accommodating this substantially thicker calibre required a redesigned Oyster case, whose imposing profile would earn the watches their enduring Big Block nickname. Three references were offered, distinguished by their bezels: the 9420 with a black tachymeter insert, the 9421 with a bidirectional 12-hour bezel, and the 9430 with a fixed steel tachymeter bezel. Although the new generation introduced more conventional chronograph dials, Tudor also retained the colourful exotic designs that had made its earlier Monte Carlo watches so distinctive.

This ref. 94210 belongs to that particularly desirable family of exotic-dial Big Blocks, combining a grey, blue and orange dial with the rotating 12-hour bezel associated with the 9421 series. The dial retains the distinctive painted hour markers of the earlier Monte Carlo chronographs, alongside contrasting registers and the characteristic Automatic Chrono Time signature arranged in an arc above the lower subsidiary dial. Its combination of vibrant colours, unusual typography and substantial Oyster case creates a watch that is immediately recognisable as a vintage Tudor chronograph. Powered by the automatic Valjoux 7750, it also represents an important technical milestone for the brand, bridging the gap between the manually wound chronographs of the 1970s and the more restrained designs that would follow.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The exotic Monte Carlo dial combines grey, blue and orange elements in a distinctive design carried over from Tudor's earlier chronographs. Painted hour markers, contrasting registers and orange accents create a particularly striking composition. The dial features the Tudor signature beneath 12 o'clock, with Automatic Chrono Time arranged in an arc above the lower chronograph register.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The substantial stainless steel Oyster case measures approximately 40mm in diameter and features the pronounced profile characteristic of the Big Block generation. Screw-down chronograph pushers and a screw-down winding crown reflect Tudor's close relationship with Rolex, whose Oyster case technology and components played an important role in the construction of these early automatic chronographs.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows some nicks and surface marks. The bezel is very well defined, while the blue insert is in near-mint condition. The dial shows some surface marks, including scratches to the outer edge at the 20 and 32 minute positions. The sub-dials exhibit some degradation around their edges, particularly between the 8 and 12 o’clock positions. The hands remain reasonably clean. The acrylic crystal shows surface scratches and marks. The pushers are later service replacements. The stainless steel folded-link Oyster bracelet shows surface scratches and moderate play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.

Our Perspective

The exotic-dial Big Blocks are among the most charismatic vintage Tudor chronographs, combining the colourful Monte Carlo aesthetic with the practicality of automatic winding. The blue and orange ref. 94210 is particularly appealing, offering a distinctive alternative to the more familiar panda and reverse-panda versions.
