Tudor Ranger II 9111/0 Blue Dial

Introduction

Throughout the 1970s, Tudor explored a number of unconventional designs that reflected the changing tastes of the decade. While its Submariners and chronographs remained closely associated with the traditional Rolex Oyster case, other models embraced the emerging fashion for integrated bracelets, angular cases and more adventurous dial configurations. Among the most distinctive of these was the Ranger II, a watch that shared its name with Tudor's established Ranger collection but adopted an entirely different design language. With its substantial case, integrated steel bracelet and characteristic notched bezel, the Ranger II represented a departure from the understated appearance of the original Ranger, offering a distinctly contemporary interpretation of the brand's sports watch heritage.

Dating to 1974, this Ranger II ref. 9111/0 is a particularly attractive example of Tudor's experimental approach to watch design during the period. Its 38mm stainless steel case features a distinctive notched bezel and an integrated bracelet, creating a cohesive architectural appearance that is immediately recognisable as a product of the 1970s. The deep blue pie-pan dial introduces another unusual element, with its sloping outer section adding depth to the display. Painted Arabic numerals at the cardinal positions are complemented by distinctive hands, including a broad arrow-shaped hour hand that gives the watch a character entirely its own. Powered by an automatic movement and fitted with the integrated Tudor bracelet ref. 9585, the Ranger II offers a fascinating alternative to the more familiar Submariner and Oyster Prince models of the same period.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The deep blue dial features a distinctive pie-pan construction, with a sloping outer section that adds depth to its appearance. Painted Arabic numerals at the quarters provide a striking contrast against the blue background, while the broad arrow-shaped hour hand and unusual handset distinguish the Ranger II from Tudor's more conventional sports watches.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 38mm stainless steel case features the Ranger II's distinctive notched bezel, an architectural detail that gives the watch much of its unusual character. Its integrated bracelet, reference 9585, flows directly from the case, creating the unified appearance that became increasingly popular during the 1970s. The combination of angular construction and contrasting surface finishes reflects the design trends of the period.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The case back shows light scuffs, while the engravings remain well defined. The bezel, however, has some more noticeable dings, particularly between 1 and 3 o’clock. The blue dial is in excellent condition, with some light discolouration to the luminous hour plots. The hands are in excellent condition, with the seconds hand retaining its vibrant finish. There are some cracks to the luminous material in the minute hand. The integrated stainless steel bracelet shows surface scratches and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with nine links, one of which is removable, and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.

Our Perspective

The Ranger II is one of Tudor's more unconventional vintage designs, combining an integrated bracelet, distinctive notched bezel and striking blue pie-pan dial. Its unmistakably 1970s aesthetic makes it an appealing alternative to the brand's better-known sports watches.
