Introduction

Launched in 2021 as a limited edition collection of just 15 pieces for Japanese retailer Hayashi, this Ulysse Nardin Classico serves as a celebration of master potter Yamato Sakutaro whose name appears on the ref. 3203-900LE-4A-HAY/1A’s caseback. Boasting a classical 39mm stainless steel case that is polished throughout, this example’s dial is a soft champagne color, much like the color of the Hagi ware pottery that Yamato Sakutaro was famed for producing. Also known as Shoroku the 1st, Yamato was born in 1855 and served as the head of the Todaiji Kiln from 1881 to 1887. His career as a potter was probably influenced by his father Yagoro, who was a potter at the Senryuzan Kiln as well as a kimono merchant, which was the family business. In 1887, Yamato opened the Hagi-Matsumoto-Shoroku Kiln in Matsumoto, but it was closed after three years. In 1889, he was invited to become the head of the Yamaguchi Pottery Company run by Bandai Hikoshichi, and the whole family moved to Yamaguchi. Celebrating the artisanal craftsmanship that is so pervasive throughout a plethora of Japanese arts, this timepiece highlights Hagi ware and one of its most important makers.
