Introduction
Originally released in 2001 as perhaps one of the most unique and distinct pieces of horological design in the modern era, the Ulysse Nardin Freak boasts an incredible array of design motifs, impressive engineering and excellent craftsmanship. Here we have the Freak X Enamel Blue ref. 2303-270LE-3AE-THG/3A THG, launched in 2023 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of PMT The Hour Glass, a luxury watch retailer in Thailand. Offered as a limited edition of just 50 pieces, this 43mm titanium variant of the Freak X boasts a bright blue champlevé enamel dial that comes complete with a stunning guilloche engraved pattern. As with all Freak variants, and whacky as it may seem, the Freak X uses its own movement to indicate the time, as the movement physically makes up the timepiece’s minute hand with the hour hand occupying the lower plate that the movement sits on top of. With its blue enamel base plate, its finely finished movement/minute hand and wonderfully unique titanium case design, the Freak X is perhaps the distillation of what original design and genuine out-of-the-box thinking within the horology industry should be. While other brands are quick to rehash old designs, Ulysse Nardin constantly seeks to innovate, and the Freak X couldn’t be a better mascot for that deep-rooted sense of innovation.

THE DISPLAY
Lacking a traditional dial, the Freak X uses a guilloche engraved blue enamel baseplate to house its hour hand, which also serves to contrast the automatic cal. UN-230 movement that is its minute hand.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Offered with a slightly more traditional case shape than other Freak variants, the Freak X boasts a traditional winding crown and fixed bezel. However, it still features plenty of different angles and a mix of differeent finishes to highlight its avant-garde design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The case has some light scratches and signs of wear. The display case back is very clean, with well-defined engravings. The dial and hands are pristine. The watch is fitted with a navy alligator strap with a Ulysse Nardin buckle in excellent condition. Comes with box, paperwork, and hangtag. Please note: The timing machine used does not appear to provide the most accurate results for tourbillon mechanisms. After winding the watch and setting the time, it seems to be running properly and keeping accurate time over a 24-hour observation period. We have left the timing machine reading here however, and note that the watch is still under its factory warranty period should the buyer decide to have the watch examined after purchase.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Perhaps one of the most unique timepieces to be released in decades, the Freak explores so many new concepts within watchmaking that it is simply mindblowing. With its movement doubling as its minute hand and avant-garde design, it is a truly exceptional watch, and this limited edition of just 50 pieces is a particularly rare example.
