Introduction

Few watches can claim to have launched the career of one of history's greatest designers, but the Universal Geneve Polerouter did exactly that. Designed by a 23-year-old Gérald Genta in 1954, the Polerouter was created to commemorate Scandinavian Airlines System's pioneering polar flights between Europe and North America. Flying over the North Pole dramatically reduced journey times but exposed aircraft instruments to unusually strong magnetic fields, prompting Universal Geneve to develop a watch with enhanced anti-magnetic properties and an advanced micro-rotor automatic movement.

Among the most collectible variants is the Polerouter Date, which refined Genta's original design while retaining its elegant proportions and distinctive architectural dial. The present example is especially appealing thanks to its original black crosshair dial, combined with its beautifully engine-turned applied chapter ring, it is an outstanding example of one of the defining watches of post-war Swiss watchmaking.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The original black dial features a distinctive crosshair layout and an engine-turned applied steel chapter ring that adds depth and visual texture. A framed date aperture at three o'clock and the restrained silver-toned details create the balanced, architectural appearance that has made the Polerouter Date one of Universal Geneve's most enduring designs.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 36mm stainless steel case perfectly showcases Gérald Genta's restrained design language, with slim lugs and balanced proportions that remain as elegant today as they were in the 1960s. Paired with a leather strap, the Polerouter Date wears as a refined everyday watch, with its understated case architecture allowing the beautifully executed dial to remain the focal point.

THE MOVEMENT

THE MOVEMENT

Powering the watch is Universal Geneve's automatic calibre 69, part of the brand's celebrated family of micro-rotor movements. Slim, technically advanced and beautifully engineered, it helped establish Universal Geneve as one of the industry's leading innovators during the golden age of Swiss watchmaking.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and nicks, while the bezel has a number of more noticeable nicks. The case back retains partially legible engravings, but the serial number is no longer visible. The black dial shows spotting, with some missing minute markers and lume plots. The hands show discolouration to the luminous material. It is fitted with a leather strap and a steel pin buckle. The watch appears to be keeping good time.

Our Perspective

The Polerouter occupies a unique place in horological history as both Gérald Genta's first great commercial success and one of the finest examples of mid-century industrial design. This example elevates that appeal further with its beautiful crosshair dial, combining exceptional aesthetics with one of the most significant designs of the twentieth century.
