Introduction

Produced during the early 1970s, the Universal Genève Polerouter Sub ref. 869121/02 represents one of the most distinctive and technically advanced evolutions of the famed Polerouter line. While the original Polerouter established itself as an elegant anti-magnetic sports watch during the 1950s, the Polerouter Sub transformed the concept into a professional diving watch suited to the adventurous design language of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Powered by Universal Genève’s celebrated micro-rotor automatic movement, the ref. 869121/02 combined sophisticated movement architecture with highly unconventional asymmetrical case design and vivid acrylic bezel inserts. Examples fitted with the red acrylic bezel, such as the watch offered here, are particularly rare and highly prized among collectors today. Combining futuristic styling with one of the great automatic movement designs of the era, the Polerouter Sub remains one of Universal Genève’s most charismatic sports watches.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

The matte black dial features printed luminous hour markers, vivid red crosshair detailing, and a clean date aperture positioned at three o’clock. The restrained monochromatic palette, punctuated by bright red accents, creates a highly legible and unmistakably sporty appearance that perfectly complements the watch’s diving-focused design.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

The stainless steel asymmetrical case reflects the highly experimental design language embraced by many professional dive watches during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its defining feature is the rare red acrylic bezel insert, which gives the watch real visual character while reinforcing its tool-watch functionality.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and small nicks consistent with the age of the watch. The case back has surface scuffs, well-defined engravings, and hand-etched service marks to the exterior. The bezel ring is excellent, while the insert shows some surface marks and signs of delamination. The dial is excellent, with marks visible in a couple of the lume plots. The hands are clean, the orange hues remain vibrant, and they appear to have been relumed at some point. It is fitted with a Universal five-link bracelet showing surface marks and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.

Our Perspective

This reference of the Polerouter Sub came with four different colored acrylic bezels: black, blue, green and red, which I believe to be the rarest color. The asymmetrical case, date window and the exaggerated crown make for a unique and stylish dive watch.
