Introduction
Produced during the late 1960s, the Universal Genève Space-Compax ref. 885104/02 stands among the most distinctive and technically ambitious chronographs ever produced by the historic Swiss manufacture. Introduced during the height of the space race, the Space-Compax combined the legendary Valjoux 72 movement with a highly unconventional asymmetric case design that reflected the era’s fascination with futurism and experimental industrial styling. Featuring oversized chronograph pushers, integrated crown guards, and a bold tonneau-shaped case, the model represented a dramatic departure from the more restrained chronographs of the early 1960s. Today, the Space-Compax is celebrated not only for its exceptional design originality, but also for its rarity and strong connection to one of the most creative periods in Universal Genève’s history.

THE DIAL
The dial features a highly legible so-called reverse panda chronograph layout with contrasting registers, luminous hour markers, and bold white printing that perfectly complements the watch’s futuristic sporting aesthetic. The slightly darkened lume plots add subtle vintage character to the display.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The asymmetrical stainless steel case is one of the defining features of the Space-Compax, combining bold angular lines with oversized chronograph pushers and integrated crown protection. Retaining its original proportions and fitted with original signed crystal and pusher caps, the construction perfectly captures the experimental design language that emerged during the late 1960s.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case shows signs of careful wear, with some light scratches visible on the case back. The serial number and ref on the exterior of the caseback are light but still visible with a loupe. There is slight wear to the black finish on the edge of the bezel, while the insert remains very clean. The dial is near mint, with slight discoloration visible to some of the lume plots, and the hands are very clean. The rubber tips on the pushers are new. The watch is fitted with a steel Universal bracelet showing light marks and negligible play between the links. The bracelet has 22 links, 2 of which are removable, and fits approximately an 8" wrist.
Our Perspective
Whether or not this "Space Compax” was ever really meant for astronauts or space travel we’ll probably never know, but the bold styling, unusual rubber-covered pushers, and spring-loaded locking crown certainly are convincing.
