Urban Jürgensen Reference 1140 Champagne Dial

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Urban Jürgensen occupies an unusual position in independent watchmaking, combining a Danish horological lineage dating to the eighteenth century with traditional Swiss haute horlogerie. The Reference 1140 became one of the modern manufacture’s signature watches, normally pairing its classically proportioned case with precious metals and elaborate hand-finished dials. In 2019, Urban Jürgensen departed from that formula with this particularly attractive limited edition, producing the Reference 1140 in stainless steel for the first time and pairing it with an equally unusual champagne-coloured dial.

Limited to just 50 pieces, is example is number 26, the watch retains the 40mm proportions and individually soldered teardrop lugs of the established 1140, but the combination of polished steel and a warm champagne dial gives the design an entirely different character. The solid silver dial combines hand-guilloché wave and basket-weave patterns with a circular-brushed chapter ring, applied white gold Breguet numerals and blued steel hands. Inside is the manually wound calibre P4, developed exclusively for Urban Jürgensen by Jean-François Mojon of Chronode. With twin barrels, a large screwed balance and 72 hours of power reserve, it ensures that the considerable traditional craftsmanship visible on the dial is matched by equally serious watchmaking beneath it.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The champagne-coloured solid silver dial combines a hand-guilloché wave pattern at its centre with basket-weave guilloché for the subsidiary seconds and a circular-brushed chapter ring. Applied domed white gold Breguet numerals are complemented by handcrafted blued steel hands with Urban Jürgensen’s distinctive diamond-polished eye.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The polished three-piece stainless steel case measures 40mm and is distinguished by individually soldered teardrop lugs, one of Urban Jürgensen’s signature details. Sapphire crystals front and back provide a view of both the elaborate dial and calibre P4, while water resistance is rated to 30 metres.

Condition

Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The stainless steel case shows a few signs of careful wear, as does the display case back. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a D-Lugs leather strap and Urban Jürgensen steel pin buckle showing light surface marks. Comes with card box, Certificate of Authenticity, instruction booklet in paper wallet, and the original used strap.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The Reference 1140 is already a compelling expression of traditional independent watchmaking, but this 50-piece edition is especially interesting for turning the established formula on its head. Stainless steel brings an understated quality to a watch normally associated with precious metals, while the champagne guilloché dial provides the richness. Add the hand-crafted details and beautifully finished Chronode-made calibre P4, and this is a particularly appealing version of one of Urban Jürgensen’s defining modern references.
