Introduction
The world of independent watchmaking is a colorful place with hundreds of brands all vying to create some of the most unique and wonderful watches the industry has seen. Natuarally, some brands have proven to be more successful than others, one such brand being Urwerk. Founded in 1997 by Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner, Urwerk’s mission has always been to create Haute Horlogerie timepieces that fuse their love of traditional watchmaking with a futuristic aesthetic that seems to have been lifted straight out of a sci-fi novel. With their distinctive case shapes and signature satellite hour markers, their timepieces have become some of horology’s most sought-after watches, one such being the model we have here, the UR-100V Blue Planet. Launched in 2021, the UR-100V expands upon Urwerk's core collection, the UR-100, in a wonderfully exciting way. Inspired by Urwerk's roots, the UR-100V "Blue Planet" tells the time as Urwerk envisaged it all those years ago, while also featuring a whole host of astronomical complications that build upon its solar and celestial-inspired design origins and push Urwerk's watchmaking credentials even further into the ether of Haute Horlogerie. Continuing with Urwerk's original design philosophy and fascination with space, the UR-100V "Blue Planet" features a number of features that pay homage to the brand’s astrological inspirations. Starting with its name, “Blue Planet” could be a direct reference to the term "Pale blue dot" that Carl Sagan coined in reference to the picture that Voyager 1 took of Earth in 1990 from six billion kilometres away that shows Earth as a tiny pale blue dot within a band of light. Linking to its name, the also UR-100V features a blue DLC sandblasted stainless steel case with a titanium caseback that sports the same finish. Furthermore, the UR-100V also features the brand’s signature satellite hour markers and two celestial complications that show the distance Earth has travelled around the Sun in the space of 20 minutes, and another that shows how far the Earth has spun on its own axis in the same 20 minute interval.
