Introduction
Modern watchmaking and all of the historical methods of timekeeping very rarely intersect. However, one brand has made it their mission to create luxury watches that explore this world, and it is Urwerk. Inspired by the most distinctly human way to measure the time; the sun’s height in the sky, Urwerk have become known for their sci-fi like watches that explore time and all of its various meanings to us as a species. Standing as a perfect example of that very fact, Urwerk, in collaboration with SJX, launched the UR-100V 'Time & Culture' in 2022 as a limited edition release of 20 pieces inspired by the Aztec calendar and its various works of art. As such, the UR-100V 'Time & Culture' boasts a copper and bronze coated stainless steel case that features a plethora of engravings that emulate those found on the Sun Stone, a 3.6m wide 24 tonne stone that is perhaps the best-known piece of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican art that tracks the Aztec calendar with an ornate series of carven imagery depicting Aztec gods and mythology, and classical motifs from Aztec culture. With its decorated cover sitting inside of its sapphire crystal dome, the UR-100V 'Time & Culture' allows its green dial to peak through in a subtle fashion as it tracks the time using Urwerk’s signature satellite discs. Furthermore, the UR-100V also features two astronomical indicators, one of which sits at 10 o’clock and shows the Earth’s rotation on its own axis as measured at the equator, that’s about 555 km every 20 minutes. And at 2 o’clock is the indicator that shows the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, 35,740 km in the same 20 minute period.

THE DIAL
Boasting a green dial beneath its Aztec art-laden cover, the UR-100V 'Time and Culture' still manages to showcase Urkwerk's signature satellite displays in a striking fashion.

THE CONSTRUCTION
While Urwerk's cases are indeed rather unorthodox, the UR-100V makes for a wonderful canvas on which Urkwerk could engrave the incredibly intricate pieces of Aztec art that are found across its case and dial cover.

Our Perspective
While watches are often described as art on the wrist, the UR-100V Time and Culture perhaps encapsulates that spirit more than any other watch could with its unique depictions of Aztec gods, mythology and motifs.
