Introduction
Vacheron Constantin has evolved over the years from their position in the shadows of their fellow "Holy Trinity" members, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, to a watchmaker that is revered throughout the entire watchmaking industry. Crucial to this development was their attractive dress watches like the ref. 6378 that we have here with its stunning silver dial and beautiful 35mm 18kt yellow gold construction. While most high-end brands typically focus on created understated round dress watches during the 1960s, there has always been room for watchmakers to experiment with timepieces that break from that convention in some way, shape or form, and form is how the example that we have here breaks from that convention. While perfectly circular in shape, the ref. 6378’s case boasts a pronounced bezel and prominent lugs that give the watch a contemporary fit on the wrist. Set apart from the typical circular dress watches of its era in aesthetics, this example also exceeds its peers in specs with its automatic movement, which adds to its appeal to today’s modern collectors. Boasting a silver dial with a unique set of hour markers that combine shape and dimension to exceed what is typically used as a boring and functional part of a watch, this example demonstrates Vacheron’s eye for detail and keen sense of craftsmanship.
