Introduction
Reference 7397 captures a fascinating moment in Vacheron Constantin's design during the late 1960s, as the restrained round watches of the previous decade began giving way to more architectural forms. Its broad tonneau-shaped case, integrated lugs and pronounced radial surface finish anticipate the increasingly adventurous designs that would define the following decade. While examples of the reference are already relatively uncommon, this watch is particularly noteworthy for its 18K white gold case, a considerably rarer configuration than the steel examples more frequently encountered.
The precious metal is deliberately discreet, giving the watch much of the visual character of steel while retaining the weight and refinement of gold. Against it sits a silver sunburst dial with applied markers, central seconds and a date aperture at three o'clock. Inside is Vacheron Constantin's automatic calibre K1072/1, providing the traditional Geneva watchmaking basis combined with the progressive exterior. Importantly, this example returned to Vacheron Constantin for a full service in 2026, providing valuable manufacture-backed maintenance for a watch now approaching six decades old.

THE DIAL
The silver sunburst dial is characteristically restrained, with applied baton hour markers, slender hands and central seconds. Dark detailing provides contrast against the silver surface, while the framed date aperture at three o'clock is neatly incorporated into the otherwise minimal composition.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The tonneau-shaped case is fashioned from 18K white gold, an unusually discreet precious-metal configuration of the ref. 7397. Broad upper surfaces, short integrated lugs and a pronounced radial finish give the watch its distinctive architecture, while the approximately 35mm dimensions belie the considerable wrist presence created by its shape.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K white gold case shows scratches and scuffs, particularly to the non-crown side. The case back shows surface scratches and retains a well-defined stamp. The backs of the lugs retain a well-defined hallmark and show marks consistent with a bracelet having previously been fitted. The case does not appear to have been fully refinished as part of the recent factory service. The dial is in excellent condition, with some light surface marks, and the hands remain very clean. It is fitted with a new Vacheron Constantin alligator strap and new stainless steel Vacheron Constantin pin buckle. Comes with original box, service carton and pouch, and paperwork pertaining to a July 2026 Vacheron Constantin factory service. Watch was sealed prior to the images being taken for the watch.
Please note that the service paperwork references the watch as a steel watch on steel bracelet, but it is wg and this is a mistake on their part.

Our Perspective
The white gold case transforms the character of the ref. 7397. It retains the cool, understated appearance associated with steel while placing this unusually architectural Vacheron firmly within the manufacture's precious-metal tradition. Combined with the excellent K1072/1 automatic movement and a full Vacheron Constantin service completed in 2026, this is a particularly compelling configuration of an already unusual mid-century reference.
