Introduction
Released in 2009 at SIHH as part of Vacheron Constantin's Historiques collection that itself debuted in 2005, the Historiques American 1921 is a contemporary version of not one, but two of Vacheron’s most iconic watches. As the name suggests, one of these models came from 1921 while the other came two years before it in 1919. Inspired by the roaring 20s and the Art Deco design period of bold geometric shapes, bright colours, and uniquely different designs to those seen in years previous, the Historiques American 1921’s construction takes its cushion shape and silver dial design as inspiration from the design language of the period. Further to that, the Historiques American 1921 also leans on the technological advancements that were being made at the time in the automotive arena, with driving becoming increasingly common. As such, the Historiques American 1921’s dial is rotated 45 degrees clockwise so that it can be easily legible while a driver has their hands outstretched on a steering wheel. Echoing this rotated design, the Historiques American 1921’s winding crown is positioned above 12 o’clock, on the top right corner of its 18kt white gold case. Boxy and shaped like a cushion with almost sharp corners, the case is exactly how it looked on the 1919 and 1921 versions – highlighting the Art Deco period that the watch was initially conceived during.

THE DIAL
Rotated 45 degrees so as to be most legible while the wearer's arm is outstretched to hold a steering wheel, the 1921's stunning silver dial is both fun and fabulously executed.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Featuring an 18kt white gold cushion-shaped case with a crown at 2 o'clock (or at 12 o'clock in the 1921's case) with short lugs and sharp corners, the 1921's construction is immediately reminiscent of the Art Deco period that inspired it.

Our Perspective
All in all, the modern 1921 is a gorgeous piece that on the surface seems rather peculiar, but in reality, is a glorious retro-inspired piece that is full of historical intricacies, nuances, and influences.
