Introduction
Vacheron Constantin has evolved over the years from their position in the shadows of their fellow "Holy Trinity" members, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, to a watchmaker that is revered throughout the entire watchmaking industry. Crucial to this development was their attractive dress watches like the example we have here with its bright blue lapis lazuli dial and beautifully texturized 18kt yellow gold cushion-shaped construction. While most high-end brands typically focus on creating round dress watches, there has always been room for watchmakers to experiment with timepieces that break from that convention in some way, shape or form, and shape is how the example that we have here breaks from that convention. Ever-so slightly rectangular with a gently swollen midcase that swoops to meet its bracelet, the ref. 2080 fills the wrist but remains incredibly neat when worn thanks to its lug-less design. With a consistent horizontally engraved finish across its mid case and bracelet, this example’s lapis dial pops against its unique surroundings. Set apart from the typical circular dress watches of its era in aesthetics, this example indeed matches its peers in specs with its ‘Extra Plate’ cal. 1003 manual-wind movement, which allows this timepiece to stand impressively flat on the wrist.

Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. Textured case and integrated bracelet has some minor signs of surface wear. The original Lapis Lazuli dial is free from any hairline cracks. There is very minor undulation visible in the bracelet when laid flat. There is no stretch in the band and it fits a 7 1/4" wrist.
Our Perspective
An aesthetically unique looking and objectively rare watch, the ref. 2080 speaks to the quirky designs of its time through its cushion shape, stone dial and unusual texture.
