Introduction

Wittnauer occupies an interesting position in twentieth-century American watch history. Founded by Swiss-born Albert Wittnauer in New York during the late nineteenth century, the company became particularly associated with precision instruments, aviation and military watches before its relationship with Longines grew increasingly close during the post-war period. By the 1960s, Wittnauer was producing a broad range of Swiss-made sports watches and chronographs, many of which today offer the design and mechanical appeal of better-known contemporaries without quite the same degree of collector attention.

Dating to the laste 1960s, this ref. 3525/14A is a particularly striking example. Its substantial 40mm stainless steel case surrounds a white “Panda” dial with contrasting black subsidiary registers, complemented by a rotating burgundy bezel and flashes of colour within the chronograph display. The two-register arrangement places running seconds at nine and a 30-minute counter at three, while a black tachymeter scale runs around the dial's perimeter. Power comes from the manually wound Valjoux 7733, one of the workhorse chronograph movements of the period. With its large proportions, strongly contrasting dial and red-toned bezel, the 3525/14A captures much of the visual character associated with late-1960s sports chronographs.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The white dial is contrasted by black subsidiary registers at three and nine o'clock, creating the classic “Panda” configuration. Applied baton hour markers sit inside a black tachymeter scale, while coloured details on the chronograph seconds hand and 30-minute counter complement the surrounding burgundy rotating bezel.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The stainless steel case measures a substantial 40mm across and 14.4mm thick, unusually assertive dimensions for a chronograph of the period. A screw-down case back and Plexiglass crystal frame the watch, while the bidirectional burgundy rotating bezel adds another functional and visual layer to its late-1960s sports-watch design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The bezel is well defined with signs of wear, while the burgundy insert is reasonably clean with some wear around the outer edge. The panda dial is in excellent condition, with some discolouration to the luminous hour plots and light surface marks. The hands show some surface marks, while both white chronograph hands have a small chip to the paint. It is fitted with a black nylon NATO-style strap with black PVD hardware.

Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

The ref. 3525/14A demonstrates why lesser-known vintage chronographs can be so interesting. There is no celebrity nickname or motorsport association required here: the appeal comes from the combination of a 40mm case, manually wound Valjoux chronograph movement and an exceptionally strong dial-and-bezel design. Its Panda layout and burgundy bezel give it the presence of the era's best-known racing chronographs while remaining distinctly Wittnauer.
