Introduction
Produced during the mid-1960s, the Wittnauer Professional Chronograph ref. 242T represents one of the brand’s most interesting chronographs from the golden era of manual-wind sports watches. Powered by the Valjoux 72 movement, the same calibre used in many of the period’s most celebrated chronographs, the model combined robust mechanical performance with highly legible instrument-style design. Over the years, the ref. 242T has become associated with persistent rumors suggesting that Wittnauer submitted the watch during NASA’s search for a qualified space chronograph, though no surviving documentation has conclusively confirmed this story. Regardless, the Professional Chronograph remains a highly attractive and purpose-built chronograph whose clean dial layout and utilitarian styling strongly reflect the professional timing instruments of the era.

THE DIAL
The black dial features a classic tri-compax chronograph layout with luminous dot hour markers and crisp white printing designed for maximum legibility. An outer telemeter scale frames the display, reinforcing the watch’s instrument-like appearance and adding an additional layer of technical visual interest to the dial.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The stainless steel case measures 38mm in diameter and reflects the restrained functional design language associated with professional chronographs of the mid-1960s. Combined with its pump pushers, slim bezel, and original signed bracelet, the watch maintains the balanced proportions and practical sporting character that define the reference.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The steel case is well defined, with some surface scratches, while the case back has several deeper scratches, most likely from case back tools. The bezel also shows scratches. There appear to be a number of small spots of metal across the case, crown, and pushers, most probably from the watch having been worn by a welder. The dial is excellent, with a surface mark visible on the minute track near 33. The hands have some marks, and the lume is discolored in the hour, minute, and chronograph hands. The watch is fitted with a Wittnauer beads-of-rice style bracelet showing only very light surface marks and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links and fits approximately a 7 1/2” wrist.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
Another cosplaying astronaut watch, for years the rumors were that this good-looking watch was in the running for the NASA Moon Watch contract that Omega eventually won. That rumor has since been debunked, but you can see why people believed it, as it certainly looks the part.
