Introduction
Arguably one of the most famous chronograph makers in all of horology, Zenith is best-known for their El Primero automatic chronograph movement. From its status as one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever made (depending on who you ask) and the base movement to feature within the second-generation Rolex Daytona, the El Primero is certainly a modern-day icon. Launched in 1969, its incredible hi-beat rate, amazing accuracy and technical prowess ensured that any watch it was inside was one of the best chronographs money could buy. Offered here we have the Pilot Big Date Flyback ref. 49.4000.3652/21.l001, which is powered by the El Primero cal. 3652, with a central date function at 6 o’clock, twin subdial registers at 3 and 9 o’clock, and a flyback function, all of which combine to create a truly exceptiona movement. Inspired by Zenith’s early heritage in the creation of pilots watches, the Pilot Big Date Flyback is an old meets new creation, with a black ceramic case, a black display with a horizontal embossed pattern, and its tremendously impressive automatic El Primero movement. Rooted in modernity just as much as it is the past, this timepiece is a wonderful reminder of just how capable Zenith’s hands are.

THE DIAL
Sporting a jet-black dial to match its case, the aesthetic of this timepiece's entire display is dark and muted, giving a tactical look - especially when combined with its militaristic applied Arabic numerals.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Made from ceramic, the Pilot Big Date's 42mm case wears on the wrist with a much more delicate poise than one would assume, thanks to how lightweight ceramic is.
