Introduction
Rolex is widely associated with robust professional watches, but in the 1950s the brand also explored refined high complications. One of the most remarkable examples is the Rolex Reference 6036, a triple-calendar chronograph with moonphase, later nicknamed the “Jean-Claude Killy.”
Produced in the early 1950s, the 6036 belongs to a rare group of Rolex watches combining day, date, month, chronograph, and moonphase indications. This level of complexity was unusual for Rolex, whose philosophy favored clarity and reliability. The watch was offered in stainless steel, yellow gold, and pink gold, featuring elegant dials with applied markers, dauphine hands, and carefully balanced calendar apertures.
The “Jean-Claude Killy” nickname emerged decades later, after the legendary French skier was seen wearing a gold Reference 6036. Killy, who won three Olympic gold medals at the 1968 Winter Games, symbolized precision, performance, and excellence—values closely aligned with Rolex. Although the name was never official, it became firmly embedded in collector culture.
Inside, the 6036 is powered by a heavily modified Valjoux-based caliber, adapted by Rolex to support its calendar and moonphase functions. Today, the Reference 6036 is among the most sought-after vintage Rolex models. Its rarity, technical sophistication, and elegant design make it a standout in the brand’s history and a benchmark for collectible high-complication wristwatches.
This particular example was retailed by Serpico Y Laino, and features a signed dial, hallmarked caseback and a stamp on the original bracelet denoting its origins from the famed South American retailer/importer.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The rose gold case shows light marks and scratches as expected of a watch of this vintage, with some oxidation present in areas. The outer case back retains its original reference and gold stamps, and there is a clearly legible hallmark on the back of the lower right lug. The correct Super Oyster non-screwdown crown is present, along with excellent pushers and correctors. The dial has some surface spotting and visible degradation at the edge at six, but the text, including the SERPICO Y LAINO signature, remains intact. The watch is fitted with a rose gold straight endlink Oyster-style Gay Frères rivet-link bracelet that is excellent, with some surface scuffs and light play between the links. The clasp bears the S&L stamp on the inner blade. The bracelet has 13 links and fits approximately a 7 3/4” wrist.
Our Perspective
A superlative example of one of the iconic complicated Rolexes, this Killy showcases all the attributes of golden age charm that you would expect from the famed maker.
